About the Job

OVERVIEW
Takes responsibility for the production of a list of book titles and online projects managed by the UK Books Editorial Production Department in accordance with schedule, cost, process and quality requirements.
Maintaining agreed standards of accuracy, consistency and clarity in the editorial presentation of SAGE books and digital content.
Achieves good relations with the academic authors/editors of our books, and providing good service to such authors/editors.
Collaborates with internal teams to define requirements, champion efficiencies.
Contributes to the appraisal of the quality of work carried out by freelancers, typesetters and digital content vendors.
Represents the department in cross-departmental meetings as required.
Takes on additional special projects, either directly or supervisory, as directed by the Head of Editorial Production (Books).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Has responsibility for all the editorial aspects of producing a list of books from transmittal of typescripts through to press-ready files and for digital delivery.
Has responsibility for all the editorial production aspects of delivering online resources.
Is responsible for selection, briefing, development and appraisal of freelance suppliers (copyeditors, proof-readers, indexers, technical artists).
Arranges schedules and controls costs.
Provides information on books in production to colleagues across the business.
Informs and involves authors/editors and colleagues in decisions which affect their books and on the progress of their books.
Allocates books to typesetters, provides or creates a typographic specification, and controls scheduling, quality and cost in line with the Department Objectives.
Supplies cover copy to the Design team, proofreads and checks accuracy of cover artwork.
Maintains and monitors style as agreed with Head of Editorial Production (Books).
Ensures accurate and consistent bibliographic information.
Arranges for, or alerts commissioning editor to, compliance with legal requirements (copyright permissions, libel, etc.).
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff:
Supervises freelance suppliers and vendors.
Planning:
Plans allocation and organization of work on individual books
Maintains forward schedules and reports progress.
Financial:
Authorizes payment to freelances and typesetters within rates agreed; recommends variation of rates where necessary.
Ensures that all work is executed within estimated budget.
Contacts
Colleagues in Editorial, Design, Manufacturing, Marketing.
Authors/editors.
Typesetters.
Freelance suppliers (copyeditors, proof-readers, indexers artists and text designers).
Liaises with the Design to approve cover proofs and artwork, to ensure coordination of cover schedule with book progress.
Finance department.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
Likely to be a graduate, with relevant editorial production publishing experience, as well as sound organizational and administrative skills. You will need experience of copyediting and proofreading.
Familiarity with Word, Adobe and Microsoft environments.
LANGUAGE, ANALYTICAL SKILLS AND PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
